In 2014, the Museum Jorge Rando was inaugurated by Málaga City Council and dedicated to the painter after whom it is named. Today, it is the first and only Expressionist museum in Spain. Its mission focuses on promoting and researching Jorge Rando’s New Expressionism, as well as the Expressionist and Neo-Expressionist movements from their origins to the present day.

Jorge Rando is a painter who bridges two centuries and approaches his work from a humanistic philosophy in tune with his contemporary world. His aesthetic, known as New Expressionism, is rooted in the principles of spirituality and humanism. The museum houses a permanent collection of his work, alongside temporary exhibitions that offer visitors the opportunity to discover his major thematic cycles, from the 1960s to the present day.
The Museum Jorge Rando is the only Spanish museum institution whose mission is dedicated to the dissemination and research of Expressionist poetics in all its forms, a pivotal period in the development of contemporary artistic culture.
Expressionism was a cultural movement that embraced every form of artistic expression, from philosophy, painting, sculpture and architecture to music, cinema and dance. Its legacy remains alive in contemporary artistic creation. It was the most humanistic of the avant-garde movements, deeply aware of the realities of its time and reflecting the events that devastated the world at the beginning of the 20th century.
The museum hosts temporary exhibitions by leading figures associated with the movement, including Käthe Kollwitz, Qi Baishi, Ernst Barlach, Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore, among others.
The Museum Jorge Rando is known as Málaga’s Living Room for Art—a meeting place for musicians, poets, writers, painters, sculptors, composers, and lovers of art and culture. Every month, the museum hosts events across a range of artistic disciplines, making it a vibrant space for creativity, exchange and inspiration.
The Museum Jorge Rando considers access to art and culture a fundamental civic right. Admission to the museum, guided tours and all of its programmes and events are completely free of charge.
